Neurology is a medical specialty concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the nervous system, which includes nerves, the brain and the spinal cord. Dr. Rana Kayal specializes in all areas of neurological injuries and illnesses, including neurological issues relative to stroke, reflex issues, optic neuritis and multiple sclerosis.
Neurology was a natural choice for Dr. Kayal. “I was fascinated with the complexity of neurologic problems, where you have to put all the pieces of the puzzle together to get to the diagnosis.” She has a particular interest in neuromuscular medicine, including diseases of the nerves and muscles. “I did my fellowship in neurophysiology with a focus on electromyography (EMG) — the test that studies the muscles and nerves.” Dr. Kayal enjoys helping patients understand their symptoms and working with them to manage their diseases.
Dr. Kayal received her medical degree from the University of Damascus Faculty of Medicine. After working as a clinical research volunteer in movement disorders at NINDS/NIH, she completed an internship in Internal Medicine at Prince George’s Hospital and completed her residency in neurology at George Washington University Hospital. In 2015, Dr. Kayal completed a neurophysiology fellowship at George Washington University Hospital. Dr. Kayal participated in rotations on the stroke team and in movement disorders at the Cleveland Clinic, as well as a rotation in neuromuscular diseases at Case Western University Hospital.
