Fauquier Health offers a wide range of surgical services for patients of all ages. Our general surgeons are all university trained and board certified in surgery. Our dedicated surgeons offer specialty focuses such as general, breast, minimally invasive, hernia, and wound care.
Telemedicine services may be available and can provide "virtual" care consultations to patients in need. Given the current environment of COVID-19, social distancing is a new norm and we understand patients should not wait for care.
Joseph Brown MD, FACS is a board-certified general surgeon with an interest in breast surgery, general surgery, and wound care. He holds certifications in wound care and hyperbaric medicine.
Dr. Brown grew up in Southwestern Virginia and graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in Civil Engineering. He worked in the coal industry as a summer intern and ultimately for several years with engineering firms in Virginia prior to attending medical school at the Medical College of Virginia. He completed surgery residency at the Carilion Hospital System in Roanoke Virginia.
He enjoys the outdoors, walking his dog, and trips to Montana in the summers with his wife and two children. He can be found in Blacksburg on Saturdays cheering for the Virginia Tech Hokies during football season.
Originally from Boston, Massachusetts, Dr. Gordon relocated to the Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina area where he grew up before ultimately attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for his undergraduate studies. At UNC, he received a Bachelor of Arts with a double major in broadcast journalism and sociology. After sensing a higher calling, Dr. Gordon decided to change his career trajectory and moved to the Washington, DC area where he completed pre-medical studies at Georgetown University, while also working in the education industry.
After four great years at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, Dr. Gordon moved to the Sunshine State for general surgery training at the University of South Florida – Morsani College of Medicine in Tampa. It was the breadth of training at USF, the Tampa Bay metropolitan area’s only allopathic general surgery residency that drew him there.
He spent the majority of his clinical time at Tampa General Hospital, a 1,000+ bed teaching hospital in downtown Tampa and the region’s only Level 1 Trauma Center, burn center, and a comprehensive transplant center. In addition, he rotated at Moffitt Cancer Center, where he gained further exposure to surgical oncology. Lastly, he spent a great deal of time at the region’s two VA hospitals, an experience he feels was especially rewarding in being able to provide care to our nation’s veterans.
Dr. Gordon returns to Northern Virginia and is ecstatic to join the Fauquier Health team. It was the tight-knit community atmosphere of Warrenton that attracted him to the area, and he is eager to put his roots down here.
His clinical interests include minimally invasive surgery, including laparoscopic and robotic surgery, hernias including complex abdominal wall reconstruction, disorders of the alimentary (stomach, small intestine, colon) and biliary tracts (gall bladder, bile ducts), as well as everything else in the realm of general surgery.
He is board-certified with the American Board of Surgery and an associate fellow with the American College of Surgeons. He holds a certificate in robotic surgery from the University of South Florida.
Dr. Gordon spends his free time with his wife Martha and their dog, running and otherwise enjoying the outdoors. He is a self-proclaimed movie buff and an avid sports fan.
