Meet certified nurse midwife, Kathleen McClelland and listen as she introduces herself and discusses OB/GYN and midwifery care at Fauquier Health.
Kathleen McClelland, RN, FNP, CNM, joined the Fauquier Health team in 2021 and brings over 40 clinical years of experience with her. “I look forward to getting to know my patients. As a Fauquier Health OB/GYN and Midwifery patient, I strive to educate patients about what it is they wish for in pregnancy/delivery. This allows me to create an individualized care plan for each pregnancy, labor, the birth of the baby, and the ever-important season of postpartum care.”
As a midwife, Kathleen will see clients by appointment for pregnancy confirmation, prenatal care and gynecology care, including family planning services. She will provide care during a woman's labor and the birth of her baby and postpartum care at Fauquier Hospital. As a midwife, Kathleen cares for healthy and low risk clients, collaborating with her medical colleagues whenever necessary. Her areas of specialty include, but are not limited to, women’s health management, contraceptive counseling, prenatal care, perinatal mood disorders, labor and delivery, postpartum care and support, and perimenopause care.
Kathleen graduated from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio in 1976. From there, Kathleen completed her post-graduate training at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia in 1979. She then attended Georgetown University in Washington, DC for graduate midwifery education where she graduated in 1991.
Prior to joining the Fauquier Health team, Kathleen McClelland was employed at several healthcare entities including Fort Belvoir Community Hospital, Manassas Midwifery Birth and Women’s Center, and BirthCare and Women’s Health. She has had experience providing care as a midwife, intrapartum care, family nurse practitioner, and an OB and NICU nurse.
Kathleen’s husband, Dan, works in Outdoor Education at George Mason University in Manassas, VA. Their oldest son, Brad, is a Forester in Cimarron New Mexico. He is married to Audrey, an environmental science teacher. Their youngest son, Ruslan, is a US Marine currently stationed in Japan. Together, Kathleen and Dan have two cats, Twilight and Shadow, and a dog, Bella. In their spare time, they enjoy hiking, camping and riding their bikes. Kathleen also enjoys gardening and cooking. For couples coming to see Kathleen for prenatal care, she enjoys hearing about the couple’s journey and “how they met.” Kathleen shared her own “how we met” story – “My husband and I both hiked the Appalachian Trail. Yes, that is right…all the way from Georgia to Maine, all 2190 miles. Dan took 5 months in 1981 to hike the AT. I completed my section hike of the AT in 1987. We met at an annual Gathering of Long Distance Hikers in Pipestem, West VA in 1989, and hit it off, marrying on Valentine’s Day, in 1993.”
