Dr. Tam Ly brings to the Fauquier Health team a wealth of expertise in the prevention and control of infectious diseases, including those related to HIV. She is a specialist regarding the medical requirements for international travel. Board certified in internal medicine and board eligible in infectious disease, Dr. Ly is also a certified phlebotomist and sementologist.  Each day, you’ll find her talking with her patients, listening and involving them—from diagnosis to treatment to recovery.

As a private practice specialist, Dr. Ly is a firm believer to the Planetree Philosophy of Care, where all parties, including the patient and the primary physician are an integral part of the treatment and therapy.

Education and Training

Dr. Ly earned her doctor of medicine degree from the Medical College of Virginia – Virginia Commonwealth University in 2002,  after earning her bachelor of science degree in chemistry from the University of Virginia in 1997.

Honors and Awards

Dr. Ly was chosen as a Medstar Research Finalist for the ICAAC Conference in Baltimore during 2007 for her research titled “Impact on Clinical Outcomes of PNA-FISH Laboratory Data Translated from the Microbiology Bench to Bedside.” She was named a Fellows Grant Program Recipient at the Annual ICAAC Conference in San Francisco in 2006, and was chosen as a poster award winner for the Third Annual Rheumatology Fellows Forum in 2005. She is also a two-time recipient of the Washington Hospital Center STAR Award.

Research

Dr. Tam Ly is involved in ongoing research for “C-Reactive Protein and its Utility in Adult Patients with Septic Arthritis” and “Impact on Clinical Outcomes of PNA-FISH Laboratory Data Translated from the Microbiology Bench to Bedside.”

Other research Dr. Ly has conducted includes: “Glucocorticoid Induced Osteoporosis – Implementation of Prophylaxis and Practice Patterns,” a retrospective chart review conducted during 2004; and “Smoking Cessation and Education in Our Clinical Practice,” a quality improvement project and retrospective chart review study conducted during 2003.

Publications and Presentations

Dr. Ly was a poster and podium presenter for “Impact on Clinical Outcomes of PNA-FISH Laboratory Data Translated from the Microbiology Bench to Bedside” during the ICAAC Conference in Baltimore during 2007.

Dr. Ly was also a grand rounds guest speaker and poster presenter at Washington Hospital Center during 2006 for “Ralstonia-Associated Vapotherm Devices.” She was also a poster presenter on this topic at the 2006 Annual IDSA Conference in Toronto, Ontario. She was also a guest speaker on the topic of “Norovirus Outbreak” for the National Rehabilitation Hospital in 2006 and various other forums.

Additional poster presentations include:  “Glucocorticoid-Induced Osteoporosis” presented at the Medstar Research Day in 2005, at the ACP regional spring meeting in 2005, and at the Annual Rheumatology fellows Forum in 2005; “Intravenous Immunoglobulin Therapy for Recurrent and Refractory Clostridium Difficile Colitis,” an ACP Regional Poster and case series presented in October 2006; and “Descending Necrotizing Mediastinitis Following Wisdom Teeth Extraction:  A Complicated Case in a Previously Healthy Male,” an ACP Regional Poster and case report presented in 2006.

Employment

Dr. Tam Ly is a private practice physician for Infectious Diseases & Travel Medicine of Northern Virginia, Ltd. Prior to working in private practice, she was the clinical supervisor for the Genetics and In Vitro Fertilization Institute in Fairfax, where she was responsible for interviewing, screening, and selecting appropriate male donors for the infertility program; and managing the team responsible for analyzing, preserving and distributing seminal samples to patients and clients. Prior to this, Dr. Ly was a teaching assistant at the UVA chemistry and biology laboratories.

Dr. Ly also serves as a panel physician at the Fauquier Health Wound Healing Center. She is skilled in the latest therapeutic methods in wound management and stays abreast of leading information through continuous training.
